Ground News

Heavy domestic cricket in Karnataka during the recent years has produced a lot of top notch player to IPL. But the Bengaluru pitch seems to have gotten tired. From a batting beauty it has dramatically become a bowling paradise.

Final Thoughts

Aaron Finch is back for Punjab after his wedding. So mostly David Miller has to sit out. Yuvraj’s fitness and form is a concern. It’s better to be drop him and include the underrated Manoj Tiwary.

RCB will mostly go unchanged. But an out of form De Kock and  Sarfaraz with unpredictable McCullum and Mandeep they have a lot to address in their batting line up. Another worrying factor is their coach Daniel Vettori thinks 6 batsman and 5 bowlers approach is the correct way to continue into this game. When you have two proper all-rounders (de Grandhomme and Corey Anderson) and don’t want to play them, your batting and bowling will lack depth. Kohli is becoming the Ricky Ponting of T20 Cricket. When he has infinite talent at his disposal his team wins. Once the talent size reduces a bit, everything goes south.

Important Stat:

RCB Winning the toss batting 1st: Lost 2 Won 0

RCB Winning the toss batting 2nd: Lost 3 Won 1

The stats suggest, RCB to have a better chance to win this game, they better lose the toss.

There was a point during Daniel Vettori’s press conference when the Royal Challengers Bangalore head coach summed up the team’s biggest challenge ahead of them. “Hopefully no one is carrying the baggage from last year,” he said, referring to their abysmal win-loss tally at home in 2017 [1 win, 5 defeats, 1 no-result]. The auction has allowed them to hit a squad reset, but that hardly guarantees success. Ask Delhi Daredevils.

But there’s already a silver-lining or two in the vicinity. For starters, they haven’t had to begin their season with both Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers injured like last time around, and have made a conscious effort to address the lopsidedness of their line-up by beefing up the bowling attack. RCB’s defeat to KKR last week sullied the pre-season excitement that Kohli & Co. tend to bring along every year, and has left them to aim for a fast start at home, where they play two games in four days.

Kings XI Punjab arrive in Bengaluru with a contrasting start. The post-auction analysis didn’t place KXIP amongst the early-season favourites but the Ashwin-led side made a convincing start, against Daredevils. Another advantage they bring along is a Karnataka core at the top of the batting line-up, which gave a good account of itself in the first game. Playing Chris Gayle at a venue where he must be familiar with every blade of grass will come as a temptation, one that Ashwin is likely to resist. KL Rahul and Karun Nair scored fantastic fifties, and Mayank Agarwal – despite his single-digit outing – will be held in high regard because of the sheer volume of domestic runs he has entered the season with.

Amongst all the things that fell in place for KXIP, the flying start for 17-year-old Mujeeb Ur Rahman (4-0-28-2) is extremely vital for a line-up that already has two other finger spinners – Ashwin and Axar – who are likely starters in all games.

When: Friday, April 13, 2018 at 8:00 PM IST

Where: M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru

What to expect: Partly cloudy skies and a maximum temperature of 29 degrees, which should dip as the game goes on. The pitch is a mystery this season. After playing out flat in 2016, there was a lot of sluggishness to it last year, which hampered RCB. Yuzvendra Chahal expects a couple of 200-plus scores this season.

Team news:

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Head coach Vettori all but confirmed that RCB will stick to their five-bowler theory, which means they’re like to field an unchanged side from the game which they lost to KKR earlier in the week.

Probable XI: Quinton de Kock, Brendon McCullum, Virat Kohli (c), AB de Villiers, Sarfaraz Khan, Mandeep Singh, Chris Woakes, Washington Sundar, Kulwant Khejrolia, Yuzvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav

Kings XI Punjab: Gayle spent some time batting in the nets but KXIP too should retain the same XI that comprehensively beat Delhi Daredevils, with a strong Karnataka core at the top of the order. Aaron Finch has joined the team, having missed their opening encounter owing to his marriage. But it’s unlikely that Kings XI would want to disturb a batting combination that served them well in their previous game.

Probable XI: KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, Yuvraj Singh, David Miller, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin (c), Andrew Tye, Mohit Sharma, Mujeeb Ur Rahma

Interesting match-ups:

– Ashwin has not dismissed Kohli in the 14 matches between them. Kohli has managed to score 127 runs off 97 balls from Ashwin.

– Umesh Yadav has enjoyed playing against KXIP, taking 20 wicket from 14 matches at 19.10. He has also picked three or more wickets in an innings five times against them. He has dismissed Yuvraj thrice in 32 balls.

– Brendon McCullum has managed to score only 34 runs from the 38 balls he faced off Axar Patel, getting out thrice in the process.

Approaching milestones:

– Brendon McCullum needs two more catches to complete 100 catches as fielder in 20-over cricket.

What they said:

“I don’t think we bowled particularly well to Sunil Narine. We went away from our plans. Apart from that it was pretty good performance” – Daniel Vettori isn’t too worried after the first defeat.

“From what I’ve gathered, he’s very calculated, and he really thinks about the game well. So far it has been pretty relaxed, pretty low-key, letting the guys do what they need to do, which is the most important thing” – David Miller on his new captain Ravichandran Ashwin.

Big Picture

Prior to Royal Challengers Bangalore’s first game this season, captain Virat Kohli said this was ‘our most balanced side ever’. After the first round of games, it appeared Royal Challengers had the most unbalanced XI among all teams: a star-studded top four, followed by an untested middle order and a bowling attack lacking penetration. Kolkata Knight Riders chipped away at that top four and then romped to a four-wicket win on Sunday.

Back home, Royal Challengers need to achieve two things with immediate urgency: find their best team balance and regain home-ground advantage. On a relaid pitch that favoured spinners, Royal Challengers won only one game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium last season.

Kings XI Punjab, on the other hand, have laid out their template for this season: using spin at various points of an innings to stifle opponents and staying aggressive with the bat. It worked in their tournament opener, against Delhi Daredevils, but there are also holes to plug, such as Yuvraj Singh’s form: he laboured to a 22-ball 12.

Also, considering the relative ease with which fingerspinners are handled in modern-day T20 cricket – Kings XI have two in R Ashwin and Axar Patel – and with death-overs specialist Andrew Tye being taken for 38 runs in four overs, there aren’t many fall-back options. Against one of the better batting teams in the IPL and with the small dimensions of the Chinnawamy Stadium, the margin of error for Kings XI is little.

In the news

Aaron Finch has joined the Kings XI squad after his wedding, and could slot in the opening position in place of Mayank Agarwal. Chris Gayle and KL Rahul also return to the home ground of their former franchise.

The likely XIs

Royal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Brendon McCullum, 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Virat Kohli (capt.), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Mandeep Singh, 6 Sarfraz Khan, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal

Kings XI Punjab: 1 KL Rahul (wk), 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Karun Nair, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Manoj Tiwary, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Axar Patel, 8 R Ashwin (capt.), 9 Andrew Tye, 10 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 11 Mohit Sharma

Stats that matter

  • Compared to pace, Yuvraj Singh has struggled against spin in the IPL since 2015. He has scored 222 runs off 219 balls against the slow bowlers, at a strike rate of 101.4 and a dot-ball percentage of 50.2. Against pace, he has scored 526 runs off 369 balls, with a strike rate of 142.6.
  • The average score batting first at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium last year (142) was 32 runs below the average overall score (174) in the IPL at this ground.
  • AB de Villiers does not have a strike rate below 150 against any form of bowling. Virat Kohli has a strike rate under 125 against left-arm pace, right-arm offspin and left-arm orthdodox spin.

Strategy punt

With five specialist bowlers in their team, Kings XI have plenty of depth in their attack. There is, perhaps, a case for Kings XI to go against the chasing trend – the team batting second has won all the matches so far this season. Also, in 25 IPL games at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium since the start of the 2015 season, only two teams have elected to bat after winning the toss.

Kings XI could opt for a high-risk, high-reward choice of staying aggressive from the outset, like they successfully did last season at the chasing-friendly Wankhede Stadium, and bat Royal Challengers out of the game. If all they manage is a par score, they have the failsafe of their stronger suit in the clutch moments of the game.

Fantasy picks

Kohli v de Villiers? Like in the real world, you’d want your best fantasy batsman to play as many balls as possible, allowing you to maximise on points. Kohli will bat higher than de Villiers, and could face considerably more deliveries. Even though de Villiers’ strike-rate is higher, Kohli could you earn more runs, and therefore more points.

Quotes

“From what I see, he’s very calculated. He thinks about the game well. Every decision he makes, there’s a reason behind why he does that. So far it’s been pretty relaxed, pretty low-key, letting the guys do what they need to do.”
David Miller on R Ashwin’s captaincy

“We probably won’t expect playing against Chris (Gayle) tomorrow with the way they set the team up in the first game and with Aaron Finch coming back to the side. But if he does, if any team knows how good he is, it’s RCB with what he’s done for the team for a number of years.”
Royal Challengers coach Daniel Vettori on Chris Gayle
