Final Thoughts

Following their five-nil drubbing in the ODI series, Australia will no doubt be glad to change formats for the one-off T20I against England at Edgbaston on Wednesday (June 27) and put their travails of the last two weeks behind them. It remains to be seen whether there is a hangover from the 50-over matches but Australia are a very different proposition in the shortest format and this winner-takes-all affair should be a keenly fought contest.

Australia have welcomed some fresh faces who were not part of the one-day squad. Batsman Nic Maddinson, leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson and seam-bowling all-rounder Jack Wildermuth have joined the party which should at least add some fresh energy while Aaron Finch will lead the side with Alex Carey taking the gloves from 50-over captain Tim Paine. It looks a more dynamic set of players than the rather pedestrian group which contested the ODI series.

England too have selected a strong squad for this match and the three that follow against India, avoiding the temptation to rest their multi-format players as they have for previous T20I series. Only Mark Wood has been given time off while Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes are missing through injury. It is, by and large, the same group of players who performed so well during the ODI series so they should not lack for form or confidence although several players – such as Joe Root and David Willey – have not had the best time of late in T20Is.

The tourists are in excellent form in T20I cricket with a far more impressive recent record in the format than England’s. Australia, who head to Zimbabwe for an T20I tri-series also involving Pakistan after this match, won the Trans Tasman Tri-Series during the winter, defeating England twice in the group stage, and have been victorious in their last six consecutive games and nine of 13 in total since the 2016 T20 WC. In contrast, England have lost four of their last five matches in this format.

However, England’s recent record at Edgbaston against the old enemy is excellent. They have not been beaten there by Australia across all formats since 2001 and hammered them in Birmingham in last season’s Champions Trophy, albeit in an ODI. The two teams have yet to play a T20I at Edgbaston and England have only played two previous matches there in the shortest format, beating South Africa in 2012 and India in 2014.
